Tiling

Tiling is used to repeat an image, filling a large area. A tile is a rectangle designed so that any image that goes off one side is continued on the other. This project creates the goldfish tile seen in the background.

Guides

Guides are used in Photoshop to allow precise registration on objects. The blue lines of the guide will not print, and can be turned on and off. To turn guides on, go to the top menu and select VIEW

Using guides, create a box around the image you want to use as a tile.

Carefully select the edge to the left of the tile. The marquee tool should select an area OUTSIDE the tile area and between the top and bottom guides. Make sure that the edges of the selected areas are exact. Copy and paste the area. The new layer is Layer 2. Move it to the right inside area of the tile. This will become the new right side of the tile. When the tiles are now put together, any fish going off the left edge will be continued on the right side.

Repeat this step using the bottom of the tile. Copy the area BELOW the bottom line and move it up to the top edge. This is Layer 3.  Any fish going off the bottom will now be continued at the top.

trimleft.jpg (32667 bytes) Trim away any part of the image on layers 2 or 3 that is not a goldfish. Anything that should be behind the fish, such as the blue of the water, should be removed.
blendleft.gif (56740 bytes) Transparent areas in a tile can be tricky. To give the illusion that the end of the tail in layer 2 is transparent, erase part of layer two until the fish below can be seen.
trimtop.gif (104727 bytes) You must decide which image is in front and which is behind. In this case, the fish from the bottom  on layer 3 are made to appear behind the fish on the background layer. Follow the steps below:
1.- Hide layer 3. (Click on the eye)

2.- Trace the back of the fish on the background layer.

3.-Go back to layer 3. MAKE SURE it is the highlighted layer. Delete the selected area out of layer 3.  Now the fish in the background layer appears to be in front of the fish in layer 3.

Variations of this technique can make a tile from any pattern.
